When shopping for a throw pillow, one must consider the shape of the pillow and the size. Throw pillows come in different shapes, including Square, Bolster, Lumbar, and Round. In order to choose a proper size, one must consider the manufacturer’s process and make sure that the pillow is manufactured in the right way. A little knowledge can go a long way.

Here are some common sizes:

Square

The most common shape of pillows is the square. You can find other shapes, such as lumbar and bolster, as well. Using the larger size of the insert, which should be one to two inches larger than the cover, creates a more voluminous effect. You can also try combining a square pillow with two or more lumbar pillows for a more eclectic look.

If you don’t have a huge budget, you can also opt to purchase standard throw pillows. These are suitable for every room and can be layered with a cushy piece of furniture to create a unique look. If you have a small space or a limited budget, you can choose to throw pillows that are only slightly larger or smaller than the original size. Then, you can use the extra space for extra pillows on your sofa or bed and you should also learn how to fluff a pillow if you want your pillows to last longer.

To select the right size of pillows, consider the size of the furniture in the room. Larger sofas and chairs are more suitable for square pillows. The average throw pillow size for a large sofa is approximately 16″ by 20″. A smaller pillow, however, may not look right on such a piece of furniture. On the other hand, smaller patterned pillows will look great with larger solid pillows in the background. To determine what size throw pillows should be, use the height of the back of the sofa or chair when choosing the right size of a pillow.

Bolster

The standard throw pillow bolster is an extremely versatile item. They are long, narrow, and are similar in shape to neck rolls. However, a bolster pillow is much larger. Most bolster pillows are used for decorative purposes. Nevertheless, if you want to use them for practical purposes, you can consider purchasing extra pillows for the sofa or bed.

They are typically 16 inches, 18 inches, or 20 inches. Although you can get larger versions, they are easiest to replace the covers. Round pillows are less common than square pillows but can balance the straight lines of other pillows. Standard throw pillows come in different shapes, but the square pillow is always the most common and versatile. Bolster pillows are used to prop up the arm and are most common on beds.

Lumbar

A lumbar pillow is an excellent choice for back support. While the standard lumbar pillow size is 14″ x 22″, you can also find larger pillows that support the entire back. The sizes vary, however, and some stores offer pillows that are as large as 16” x 24” or as small as 12″ x 20″.

If you want a lumbar standard throw pillow with a more traditional design, you may want to look for one that is cylindrical in shape. Both are designed to provide back support and are often used as decorative accents. You may also use a bolster alone on a chair or as additional cushioning on a daybed. Depending on what you are looking for, you can find a lumbar pillow that matches your decor.

Depending on the size of your seating space, the lumbar standard throw pillow should be the appropriate depth. If you have a narrow sofa, the lumbar pillow should be at least 16” in depth. The height should not exceed the back of your sofa.

There are many options when choosing a standard throw pillow. You can choose from many different materials such as cotton, polyester, leather, and velvet. Each material has its own feel, look, and care requirements. If you have a pet, you should opt for a machine-washable pillow instead of a specialty throw pillow made of a synthetic fabric. Also, some throw pillows are meant to be dry cleaned and should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Round

Standard throw pillows are round and can be filled with down, polyester, or microfiber. Some are decorative and sold in packs of two; others are sold individually. Depending on the type of filling, you can choose a pillow with a high level of support or a low fill weight. If you are buying several round pillows, you may want to look for ones that come in pairs and offer price breaks. Buying several pillows for a single room is also a good idea, as you’ll get more bang for your buck.

Decorative pillows are a great addition to any room. They can be used anywhere, including in bed and on a sofa. Many are machine-washable and can be spot-cleaned. They also feature a soft, skin-friendly fabric and fiberfill, which means they’re easy to clean and don’t get ruined by moisture. Most of these pillows are available separately. Regardless of the type you purchase, you’ll have no trouble finding one that fits your room and personal style. They will also help you to sleep better and comfortably.

If you’re not sure whether or not a round pillow is right for your space, consider its size. Round pillows are usually around 18″ to 22″ in diameter. Although they’re not as popular as square pillows, they can balance the lines of other pillows in your space.

The size of your decorative pillow will depend on the fabric you choose. For example, a 20-inch pillow can be made from a 21-inch square fabric, including 1/2 inch seam allowance. Likewise, a round pillow cannot be made with a square pillow because the filling will pull the sides inward. In such cases, you’ll want to measure from corner to corner. In the case of a zipped pillow, you’ll have to unzip the insert.

Conclusion

There are a few things to consider before purchasing a standard throw pillow. The material used for the fill should also be a factor. Most down pillows are filled with feathers and down-alternative fill is often less expensive. Down is also more expensive than polyester, so make sure you check the cost before buying a pillow. Luckily, down-alternative fill does not have the same drawbacks as down, so you can save money and get a more luxurious pillow.
